The disc drive needs to be paired online

- After a format or a reset, the console asks to pair the disc drive again.
- The disc drive is not registered and discs are not recognized.
What it means
Sony says the removable disc drive works only with the CFI-2000/7000 model group, and that an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console when you set it up. Users report that, after a format or a reset, the console asks to pair the drive again, which they cannot do offline.
What to do
Check that it is the removable drive for the CFI-2000/7000 models

Sony's steps: turn the console off, unplug it and let it cool, then line up the drive's clips with the two marked holes and push until you hear a click. Put the cover and the stand feet back, reconnect the cables and turn the console on.
Know that pairing needs the internet
Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and the console at setup. Before you connect, make sure automatic updates are off, and stop if the console asks you to update.
When to stop
No offline way confirmed
This guide found no confirmed offline way to pair this drive while keeping a low firmware. Connecting is your decision, and never accept a system update. If you get a disc error after a reinstall, also check the model, the game license and the disc itself: it does not automatically mean the laser is broken.
